Equipment

Tech is important - especially when you work in an industry that relies on it, and in 2017 that's almost everything. It is amazing how technology has changed things so much. I can remember a time not so long ago that in order to participate in something like a radio show like I do with KXL you would have to be in the studio. You could call in but you would be able to tell that you were on the air over the phone. It worked, but it was obvious. Today technology allows you to be able to participate from your home office or other remote location - and it sounds like your at a mic in the studio. This is great - as we are starting to prepare for season 4 of our 1 hour format we have completely upgraded the studio. Digital mixers, mics, and the ability to tie conferencing right into the board. I'm looking forward to our guests for this year - we are going to have some great people because they can participate from wherever they are! We are also going to be publishing season 1 as podcasts - I'll post the link when it's available.

Blue Ribbon in Las Vegas, Nevada

It was a clear Las Vegas morning when the Cumulus Technology Team started to prepare for the day that would be the ribbon cutting event with the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce.  One could not ask for a nicer day in Las Vegas.  The weather was perfect with comfortable temperatures. Firehouse setting up the food with the help of Nicolina Davi - Chaz's assistant. A quick photo before everyone arrived to document the occasion. Oh hey! Look it's me posing with the new Las Vegas Metro Chamber plaque and the We Are Technology banner. Chaz Wellington, the Major Accounts Architect –VP Las Vegas Development, did all the ground work to prepare for the occasion that was catered by Firehouse Subs, which - by the way – everyone thoroughly enjoyed.  Georgia Allen, Member Relations Coordinator for the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce came with chamber members and assistants to make our celebration official with the Giant Scissors and Big Blue Ribbon that we all signed afterwards. William Sikkens The CEO, William Sikkens, of Cumulus Technology, Inc.  was interviewed by local station Fox 5 Las Vegas and was later presented with certificates from each of the state officials that were in attendance.   After cheerful presentations were made then came the final big ribbon cutting moment followed by photo opportunities, announcements, and introductions by Stevie Kellum of Next Best Bartender.  Cumulus Technology is a Strategic Partner with Next Best Bartender and are the website developers of www.NextBestBartender.com along with the Mobile App that is soon to be released. HIPAA HITECH

What Exactly is HIPAA? HIPAA, short for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, is a set of regulations first introduced in 1996 that regulate how electronic health records are handled by medical providers and medical billing companies. The new HIPAA HITECH introduces new regulations and clarifies some of the previous areas where exact implementation was hard to understand. One new area that HIPAA HITECH covers is that the vendors (entities that maintain, store or handle protected electronic health information) can also be fined along with their covered entities if they fail to meet HIPAA requirements.  In plain words - the computer guy that certified the doctor as being HIPAA certified can also get in trouble if the requirements are not met. How bad are the fines? Violations of HIPAA can incur very steep fines as well as, in some cases, criminal charges. The average fine can be around $25,000 - $50,000 per incident per provider. So if there is a medical provider with 3 doctors and protected electronic information is not handled correctly, a fine of $150,000 may be assessed.  This is the kind of fine that any small or medium sized business cannot afford to ignore let alone the original reasons why such regulations were made to protect confidentiality. Technology and Marketing

As a company that focuses on business to business sales, marketing has been problematic.  Old conventional sales techniques do not work for a company such as ours.  The billboards, newspaper ads, mailers, and TV commercials work great for companies providing products to a normal consumer based client strategy.  The consumer will see the advertisement with a photo of a great pair of shoes or an awesome trip to an exotic location and be inspired to seek out the product, but we offer services for helping companies that are required to be HIPAA certified, or require banking industry level secure data bases, or that need custom software.  We have a very specific audience.  We cannot post a photo of finished code saying, “Our code is awesome and come on down and get it!”   Even though it is, but often the code is like a secret recipe or nondisclosure material for the client, and you don’t share that information.  So we have to be a part of the new exchange of ideas and connections through social media because we have to be careful on how we spend our marketing funds.  The smart companies in this economic climate are the ones that will get to finish the race, and social media is part of that plan. Transforming our brains with technology or is it marketing?

How technology is transforming our brains is an interesting article to contemplate, and an argument that has been discussed for centuries as the author does eventually point out, but I observed something interesting about how this article was written. To me, it did not flow well and was divided into chunks that did not easily transition but relied upon bold type face and paragraph spaces to suggest a new and different point was being made. Perhaps the author was not fully aware that his writing style has been affected by technology and modern marketing.  Just something to think about as technology continues to change how we think and react. PHP Cocktail Mixer

NBB hopeful waiting The Cumulus Technology Team had a great weekend spending time with the crew of Next Best Bartender, which is an up and coming reality TV show being produced by talk show personality, Stevie K. and Film Producer Kevin Kellum.  Saturday, September 28 was the first casting call in Reno, Nevada for the participants that will compete for bragging rights and a combination of cash and prizes worth 25K.  Some of the Cumulus Tech Team was tempted to audition, but the rules are that one has to be 21 years of age, not a professional bartender, and one cannot be affiliated with the production team, and well, Cumulus Technology are the technology Judges: Harvey Lowery, Stevie Kellum, and Joseph Squellati advisers to the show, not to mention several members are Executive Producers as well.   But what a sight to see! Approximately 30 hopefuls showed up for the small town audition at the Rise Nightclub.  They were all filled with enthusiasm and butterflies as they each took their turn to be interviewed.  Later that night the announcement of the winners was made with a great deal of excitement.  I wonder if those participants know how much this could change their lives? Next weekend, October 5 will be the second set of auditions for Inside Rise Nightclub the show at the FACES Nightclub in Sacramento, California.  This will prove to be a much bigger crowd from the capitol city of the Golden State, and the Cumulus Team plans to attend this event as well.  And for those interested in being part of the new reality TV show and cannot make the Sacramento Casting Call, there will be a third
